Diet plays an important role in our daily activities, including sleeping at night. Have you ever wondered why it takes you so long to sleep and your dear friend doesn’t even make it to bed before she starts to snore?

Oftentimes, people don’t pay attention to their meals before bed. Studies show you have to eat two hours before bed, but that also determines the kind of food you eat. There are certain foods you shouldn’t eat before bed and they include:

1. Caffeine

If you do not want to sleep at night, take caffeine. Students often take coffee to read and study at night. Caffeine makes the brain stay active for a long time; hence, the inability to sleep.

2. Spicy foods

You should try as much as possible to avoid eating anything spicy before bed. Food that contains chilli pepper can change the body temperature and that in turn will affect your sleep. Capsaicin found in chilli pepper can cause indigestion.

3. Fatty foods

When you eat greasy fatty foods, your stomach tends to work harder. This makes the stomach produce acid which will spill onto the oesophagus and lead to heartburn.

4. Alcohol

Alcohol prevents you from getting into the deeper stages of sleep, leading to grogginess the next day or a serious hangover. You might wake up feeling nauseated.

5. Cheese

This food contains higher levels of amino acid called, Tyramine, which could cause the brain to release an alert chemical into the body
