BUK Joins SSANU, NASU Protest

INFOMEDIA – The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational Institutions (NASU), Bayero University, Kano branch have joined the nationwide protest embarked upon by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the two unions.

The JAC had on Tuesday, 9th November, 2021 directed the two unions to conduct nationwide strike for three days between 10th and 12th November, 2021 to press home their demands over the Federal Government’s decision to disburse 25% share of earned allowances to three non-teaching staff unions.

JAC in the letter sent to its members said it would not agree with the FG’s lopsidedness and warned that failure to rescind this decision, the two unions have no alternative than to use the language which the government understands better.

In response to the directive, the BUK JAC, comprising SSANU and NASU took to the streets in Bayero University, Kano New Campus and marched to the main Senate Block in which the Chairman of SSANU, Comrade Mustapha Aminu and NASU Chairman, Comrade Abdullahi Nasir addressed journalists and showed their dismay over government’s insensitivity in preferential treatment over the share of earned allowances.

According to Comrade Aminu, “we have come to inform the Vice Chancellor of the directive given to us by the National JAC to embark on peaceful protest and present a letter to the Vice Chancellor to that effect. He expressed dismay over the government’s unnecessary delay in the payment of national minimum wage arrears, saying it was long overdue.

The NASU Chairman, Comrade Nasir said if the two unions are pushed to the wall, they would embark on total and indefinite strike, advising the government to honour its agreement signed with the two unions.
