Bayero University Kano, BUK, has confirmed the increase in tuition and accommodation fees, saying that the increment was as a result of prevailing hike in the cost of commodities.

INFOMEDIA reports that the university, in its official weekly bulletin, had announced the increase in tuition fees and accommodation charges, a decision that generated uproar among students and members of the public.

However, speaking to journalists at his office on Monday, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration of the university, Haruna Wakili said the decision followed requests from departments and units of the university demanding the increase in the fees. According to him, the university’s authorities did not increase fees for hostels but streamlined the charges to make it uniform for national and international postgraduate students of the institution.

He disclosed that Nigerian postgraduate students pay N80,000 hostel fee while foreign students pay N60,000, saying that the situation called for immediate review to make the fee uniform at N80,000. Mr Wakili stated that the university had increased only N200 on the registration fee, adding that other increments were on Administrative Charges.

For instance, we have increased acceptance fee from N5,000 to N10, 000. Reissuance of result is increased from N500 to N1, 000. This affect only some students who are careless to keep the copy of their result.

Other charges include reprinting of evidence of payment of registration fee, correction of names on the admission letter because to us, the name is correct but if you want change it, you have to pay. “On the hostel fee, it is not applicable to every student. It is only applicable to those students who choose to stay on campus. Let me tell you that our campus accommodates only 18% of our students,” Mr Wakili said.

The DVC also stressed that the increment and new charges were not applicable to every student, lamenting that the media reported wrong information to the public. He also emphasised that only N200 was increased on the registration fee, which is applicable to every student, but other charges affected some students who have some other problems.

Mr Wakili, however, admitted that the university management did not consult the student union before making the decision, saying the management was willing to review some of the administrative charges.
