Bayero University Kano’s Professor Umar Garba Danbatta has been re-appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari as the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

The spokesperson to the Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Mr. Uwa Suleiman, said in a statement on Friday, 5th June, 2020 that the reappointment is  an effort to consolidate the gains made in the telecommunications sector in line with the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy.

He explained that in an effort to consolidate the gains made in the telecommunications sector in line with the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy, President Muhammadu Buhari approved the reappointment of Professor Umar Garba Danbatta as the Executive Vice Chairman, Nigerian Communications Commission.

Professor Danbatta was first appointed in August 2015 by President Muhammadu Buhari and within the five years he had achieved tremendously to revolutionize the telecommunication industry.

Prof Danbatta tremendously transformed the Telecom Sector in the areas of staff welfare, infrastructural development, consumers’ empowerment and satisfaction, job creation, standard information and communication technology revolution, research and development, re-branding of the telecoms sector, cordial relationship with stakeholders, increase in active mobile broadband penetration, efficient monitoring and value driven usage for the provision of different types of services.

As the EVC/CEO, Professor Danbatta declared 2017 as the Year of the Consumer. This is to underscore the importance he attaches to the consumer.

Professor Danbatta began his work career in Bayero University as an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Technology (now Faculty of Engineering) in 1985 and rose to become a Professor in 2003.

In the course of his career he held various academic positions of Dean, Faculty of Technology (now Engineering) and Head of Department at different times.

He held different administrative committees that included Deputy and Acting Dean of Student Affairs; Administrator of the Works Department; Director, Centre for Information Technology (CIT); Member of over 60 committees and task forces, including numerous stints as chairman. Danbatta served on over 20 committees, prominent among which was his Chairmanship of the Implementation Committee of Kano State University of Science and Technology, Wudil after which he became its pioneer Deputy and Acting Vice Chancellor when it took off in 2001.
