A group of concerned indigenes of Kano State, under the auspices of PPE for AKTH, have donated Personal Protective Equipment, PPE, worth N16 million to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.

INFOMEDIA gathered that PPE for AKTH is a group of like-minded indigenes of Kano state who decided to support AKTH with PPE in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak, which infected over 50 staff of the hospital due to lack of adequate protective equipment.

Speaking during the handing over of the items, held at the hospital on Friday, the initiator of the group, Engr. Sani Umar said the idea of donating the PPE was out of concern about the state of health in Kano during the outbreak of COVID-19.

According to him, the medical services in AKTH had become paralyzed when over fifty of health workers reportedly contracted the virus, prompting the closure of medicine department and other important units of the hospital.

He noted that the situation had left many Kano residents who suffer underlying ailments to have less or no medical attention, causing several deaths that were not COVID-19 related.

“This is a hospital with many doctors. This is where most of the people with underlying ailments come. Unfortunately, over 50 of the doctors have contracted the virus. Medical services had paralyzed, as medicine department, specialty clinic and other important units have been forcefully closed due to shortage of doctors.

“So, we feel that these health workers in this hospital need to be protected. I therefore started making contacts to some well-meaning indigenes of our dear state and before you know it, here we are,” he said.

Mr Umar also disclosed that the Chairman of BUA Group of Companies, Abdussamad Isyaku-Rabi’u donated N10 million while other individuals donated over N6 million.

He explained that the group had to contact the management of the hospital on the type of equipment they need in the fight against the COVID-19 before they went ahead to purchase the items.

“We have done this because it is our dear state. Even some of the indigenes of Kano that live in other states have been contacted and contributed a lot towards this support.

“Let me use this opportunity to thank the chairman of the BUA Group for his prompt and kind response to our request. We also call on other individuals to continue supporting our health facilities, not only AKTH. We will also support other hospitals like Murtala Muhammad Hospital, Abdullahi Wase Hospital, among others,” he promised.

He added that the second batch of the donation would be presented on Monday.

In his remarks, the Chief Medical Director, CMD, of the AKTH, Prof. Abdurrahman Abba-Sheshe said the gesture is the biggest donation received by the hospital since the outbreak of COVID-19.

While promising to use the items judiciously, the CMD called on individuals and group to emulate the efforts of the PPE for AKTH in order to achieve success in the fight against the killer disease.

INFOMEDIA reports that items donated include 6 units of Oxygen Concentrator, 20 units of Pulse Oxymeter, 200 pieces of PPE Overall and N95 Face Mask.

Others include, 150 packets of hand gloves, 2,000 pieces of nylon apron, 800 bottles of hand sanitizer, 50 pieces of goggles (high end) and 100 pieces of face shield, among others.
