FG Mulls Lifting of Twitter Ban

INFOMEDIA – President Muhammadu Buhari mulls the possibility of lifting the Twitter ban in Nigeria. Buhari gave the hints while delivering a presidential speech on 61st Independence day ceremony in Abuja.

Recalled that Twitter was banned on the 5th of June earlier this year by the Nigerian Govt in response to deleting the Twit made by President Muhammad Buhari.

A couple of months after Twitter was banned, Buhari said ” The recent events have shown that the platform is not incontinence for information dissemination, ” the statement read in part. He added that “rather, some users have used the platform to organize, coordinate, execute criminal activities, propagate fake news and promote ethnical and religious sentiment.”

He also revealed that a presidential committee was inaugurated when Twitter reached out to resolve the decision taken by the government.

The presidential committee with their technical team met with Twitter to discuss some key issues such as national security, fair taxes, dispute resolution, registration, physical presence, local content and a few more.

He further said a possible lift of the Twitter ban is soon to be known and finished off by giving his full permission for the suspension to be lifted if the platform can be used for business and positive engagement among Nigerian citizens.
