Presidential Visitation Panel Commences Work in BUK

INFOMEDIA – The Presidential Visitation Panel to Bayero University has started its assignment under the Chairmanship of Professor Femi Otubanjo.

In the exercise of the powers of the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces as the Visitor to Federal universities, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, appointed a 7-member Visitation Panel to Bayero University, Kano to undertake a comprehensive review of the activities of the university for the periods 2011-2015 and 2016-2020.

On Monday, 26th April, 2021, the Panel paid a courtesy call on the Vice Chancellor, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas in which the Chairman, Professor Otubanjo stated that they came to conduct a review of 10-year activity and   provide a feedback to the government.

He said the exercise was a mutually beneficial assignment in which the government needs to know the strength and weaknesses of its universities, while the universities will also bring to the fore their weaknesses, strength  and areas that need improvement.

Welcoming members of the Panel, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Abbas assured it of University’s full support and cooperation to ensure that they conduct the exercise successfully.

Documents chronicling activities of the University were later presented by the Vice Chancellor to the Panel, to serve as working papers and reference materials for the two-month assignment.

Other members of the panel are: Professor Mohammed Isa Kida, Dr. Ezinne Nwadinobi, mni, Arc. Mansur Kurfi, Barr. Isaac Ada Idota, Mrs. Essien Out Usendiah and Mr. John Mairafi Amadu.

Recall that the Visitation Panels to universities were inaugurated by Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu on Tuesday, 13th April, 2021 to among other things inquire into the level of implementation of the white paper on the last visitation report; look into leadership quality of each university in terms of the roles of Governing Council, the vice chancellors and other principal officers, as well as look into the financial management of each institution including statutory allocations and internally generated revenue over the recommended period to determine whether it was in compliance with appropriate regulations.

Other areas to look into include staff adequacy and staff development, law establishing the university, general security operatives and process and structures of discipline of students in line with due process of the rule of law.
