Reps Urge Buhari to Order Reopening of Schools

INFOMEDIA – The House of Representatives on Tuesday urged President Muhammadu Buhari to order a partial reopening of schools to allow students to sit for the 2020 West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination.

At plenary on Tuesday, the House unanimously adopted a motion moved by a member, Nnolim Nnaji over the issue.

The House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education and Services last Friday faulted the decision to disallow Nigerian students from sitting for WASSCE to be conducted by the West African Examination Council for the 2019/2020 academic session due to COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, schools at all levels have been shut since March due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria.

INFOMEDIA reports that Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, at the end of a meeting of the Federal Executive Council last Wednesday said all federal schools would remain closed until it was safe to reopen them.

The minister similarly urged state governments that had announced schools’ resumption plans to rescind such, noting that WAEC could not determine the resumption date of schools for Nigeria. He alleged that the council announced the date of examination while the government was still consulting stakeholders on how to go with the examination.
