SUG-BUK Embraces Open Governance, Pledges to Involve Communication Students in Processes

INFOMEDIA – The leadership of the Student Union Government, Bayero University Kano SUG-BUK has on Tuesday 9th February, 2021 expressed an acceptance and adoption of open governance system in Bayero University Kano.

This statement was made available by the Public Relation Officer (PRO) of the Union – Comrade Inuwa Ibrahim (Abu-Afnaan) during a meeting with the conveners of the Open Governance (OG) campaign.

The meeting which was held at the SUG-BUK Secretariat had in attendance, the Public Relation Officer of the Union, the Vice President of the Union- Rabi Isyaka Rabiu among others.

Members of the OG campaign team are communication students who are leveraging on social media platforms to establish and advance Open Governance through their campaign efforts.

In a statement by the team’s Facebook handler – Mustapha Salis Yakub, the Open Governance campaign is geared toward institutionalizing governance of open information across Nigeria higher institutions.

He added that the campaign has started generating responses from students in various institutions. He however revealed that the campaign is at it’s pivot stage and that the emphasis at this time is on Bayero University, Kano.

Speaking on the sustainability of the campaign, Mr. Sule Matthew – a member of the OG campaign team revealed that the OG campaign team have initiated arrangements with relevant stakeholders to create a lasting platform for student leaders to periodically engage students on policies, implementation strategies, financing, allocations among others.

“On the long run, our goal is to influence a system of governance that is rooted on accountability, transparency and maximal students inclusiveness” he added.

The PRO of the students union expressed the willingness of the union to embrace and adopt the Open Governance proposal adding that the union would henceforth, involve the OG campaign team in processes.

In a comment by Nwachukwu Ijeoma Favor- a member of the OG campaign team, it was disclosed that the Open Governance campaign is a brain child of a course work for 400L students of the department of Information and Media Studies under the supervision of Dr. Nura Ibrahim who also doubles as the Head Of Department.

The Vice President of the student Union expressed her double commitment to both the Open Governance proposal and the Open Governance Campaign as she is also from the Department that birthed the campaign.
