Residents in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State on Friday protested against the total blackout for that spanned weeks in their comminity, and urged Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), to provide prepaid meters for the area.

The 13 communities, who staged a protest at various roads, caring placards, said they were tired of estimated and outrageous billing given to them by AEDC.
The aggrieved residents demanded that prepaid meters be provided for the entire community.

The Protesters numbering about 100, carried placards with different inscriptions including, “No light, no bill.”

The protesters chanted as they marched on the road. They complained about the lack of electricity in Karu and surrounding areas and condemned the rise in electricity tariff.

Chairman of community, Mr. Musa, said the community had written series of letters to the authority, stating their plight but that has yielded no any result.

He said, “We are tired of unnecessary bills because we pay for a commodity which we do not consume. We have been in darkness because AEDC has disconnected us completely. We need prepaid meters to enable us to pay for only what we consume.”

The former Chairman of Jiwapye Phase 2 Layout community, Mr Gbenga also lamented the high estimated bills the community always receives.

One of the residentds, Honourable Mahmoud Girma lamented that the situation is escalating every day, and no sign of relief from the relevant authority.

He said, “I pay up to huge amount of money every month for power, which I don’t use because of the nature of my job. I leave home early in the morning and come back late at night.”

The community also pleaded on the Federal Government to intervene in the problem and vowed not to pay their bills if electricity supply was not stabilised.

Another protester and an activist, Chief David Aboki said that the epileptic power supply was not commiserate to the high monthly bills ranging from N6,000 and above.

On his part, Architect Lanre affirmed that the areas mostly affected are City college of education to Lape Estate and many other estates/communities namely Shekopman 1, 2 and 3, Ruga Juli, Ruga Madaki, Becky Estate 1 and 2, Vintage Estate , Master key 1 and 2, Universal Residents Association.
