The president of the Student Union Government (SUG), Bayero University Kano, Comr. Sa’id Garba has revealed to the Campus Accountability Network his efforts in making students budget public and the associated antagonistic potentials to his initiative.

“When I decided to publicly release my budget to the entire student community of Bayero University, I got calls from my fellow colleagues disregarding my action”.

These were words from Sadi Garba Sa’id, the current president of the Student Union Government at Bayero University, Kano.

Said Garba is a 400L student from Library and Information Science. After winning the 2019/2020 SUG election, stated his core primary mandate is to establish a transparent governance and management system.

” The School management, students and other members of the society have viewed the SUG as being corrupt, even as young leaders due to the increase in reported cases of different embezzlement of funds entrusted to the Student Union Government executives.

The zeal for change, brought over two hundred students to the first town hall meeting organized by the SUG executives late in February to discuss the proposed capital budget for the 2019/2020 session.

This brought smiles and joy to the faces of the students who yearn for the opportunity to speak up, for their voices to be heard in decisions that affects their standard of living on campus.

An anonymous female student appointed as special assistant to the president expressed so much appreciation and yet the anguish that female students at Nana Hall of the old site campus go through while using the restroom, which has continued to be in bad condition.

The bad condition of their restroom has led to the increase in breeding mosquitoes which causes the rise of malaria reported cases at the school clinic.

Students loved this new development on campus concluding that the president is true to his words, taking steps to achieve his mandate as promised.

The recurrent budget has a total amount of N2,967,800 with N 1,064,200 released by the Deanery of Student Affairs.

The president further promised to release the capital budget as soon as it is approved and continue to work with other stakeholders such as the Nigerian Students Accountability Network, BUK chapter, the Student Transparency Partnership.

This is key towards proving he is a student leader worth emulating, as a Campus Accountability Figure hs is seen as a good egg amidst the rooten.

This report was compiled by a Student Accountability Champion, a member of the group of watch dogs who serve as Independent reporters and observers to submit reports of budget analysis, defaults, tracking of budget activities and retirement details to the student community.
