By Rabiu Musa
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Kano, Sokoto zones has raised the alarm over police silence on the abduction of their branch member, Mr Abubakar Idris, since August, 2019, at his Kaduna residence.

Addressing a press conference, the branch chairman of Uthman Danfodio University, Sokoto, Dr. Abubakar Sabo, who read the text of the briefing lamented the silence and non-response to their letter addressed and delivered to the Kaduna Police commissioner over the abduction of their branch member.

According to him, ASUU members who also said their lives are no longer safe, said their branch member was abducted from his residence at Shagari Low-cost, Barnawa, Kaduna State on the August 2, 2019 at about 1:00 a.m. by unknown armed persons.
He narrated that the abductors took him in his own car from his house and all efforts to trace his whereabouts by the union had proved abortive so far.

“Mr. Abubakar Idris is a lecturer in the Department of Languages and Linguistics, Federal University Dutsin-ma, Katsina State (FUDMA) branch. His family formally reported the case to the police and other security agencies in the state but no positive response has been received from any security agency till now.
“The abductors up till date have neither called for a ransom nor stated any reason for his abduction. On the October 11, 2019, the branch submitted a letter to the office of the Commissioner of Police, Kaduna State formerly reporting the case and soliciting for his quick intervention to trace his whereabouts but up till now, no positive response has been gotten from them.

The union views the abduction of its member as inhuman and an abuse of his basic human right leading to tension and uncertainties to members of the university community and his family in particular. ASUU therefore implore the security agencies to be more proactive in finding out the whereabouts of our missing member and securing his immediate release. We also appeal to well-meaning Nigerians to support us in this crusade,” he added.
