Campus Unionism and Academic Excellence

By Olayinka Abdurrazzaq

INFOMEDIA – The purpose of every individual’s effort in everything is to excel. It has been settled that excellence comes not only with incessant efforts but persistence, endurance and patience, which are the keys to success and excellence.

The song, ‘Ago is a Goal’ still reasonates and rings in my head, as if today was the day when Ago started his campaign in the faculty of Law, University of Ilorin. The day, was an immemorable day when Ago was reading his manifesto that people started singing: Ago is a goal! Ago is a goal!! Ago is a goal!!! Even his opponent felt defeated before the election was conducted. Then, Ago was the love of the law students.

It is a thinking of mediocracy that campus unionism is made for those with bad GP. They believe campus leaders have lost the hope of graduating with good GP and they want to cover their mediocre with being involved in politics. Ago betrayed this thinking. He entered into politics with a strong GP of 4.37 which was rare amongst his colleagues.

He won the election with a clean slate. His election was free and fair. I can say it is the freest and the fairest one. Like that of Abiola of June 12. He was declared the winner with a distance of votings that was beyond bearing. Abdul Akeem Ago, the President of the Law Student Society of 2018/19

Ago started his administration with a new dimension and the Faculty started to witness changes. He rejuvenated the lost glory and relived the dead things in the Faculty: Lecture rooms fans, Electric bulbs, taps and many other things were reinvigorated.

In fact, his level of excellency made him the president of LAWSAN of the Northern at the same time, LLS’s president. He was the one that innovated the Law Student’s Alumni Association of the university of Ilorin. He invited many facilitators during his tenure, which enlightened us to the rudiment of what law is exactly his.

if I should started counting his achievements within his administration, I would not be able to cover it for years. With all his striving and commitments which made his administration came out in fly colour which is worthy of emulation and celebration as well his academy was not suffered from any impediment but excellence.

He graduated with a strong GP of 4.21, which is rare. Even most students who faced their courses only, without any extra-curriculla didn’t get. He said to me that: “When the lectures saw his result they were very flabbergasted and said that, ‘so campus unionism is not an excuse for not to graduate a good GP’.”

Ago broke the record and set pace for all those who may want to enter into campus politics. Leadership position is not an excuse for poor academic excellence. Ago ruled like never and graduted as the best. What a blessing!

Ago has done it and won it. He came, saw and conquered. It is a saying that, “What sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander”. Excellence in Campus Unionism does not mar your intellectual ability, once you are ready to sincerely serve your people and your goals. Behold, it is a means of killing two birds with a stone.
