As Academic activities of Bayero University, Kano reaches middle of the semester, students of the University are lamenting that most of the lectures are either not taking place or have not been covered to an expected extent.

While most of them expressed optimism that the mid semester break is essential for them to break away from academic a little, they admitted that academic itself has not been rigorous all this while.

Speaking to Infomedia, a 200 level student of the Department of Political Science who does not want his name in print for fear of backlash stated that, “My experience this semester has not been quite exciting per say, particularly on issue of lectures which you just mentioned. There are some courses I registered for and it is not even on the time table talk less of taking the lecture. Some lecturers also a lackadaisical with lectures, they have not been punctual even when they try coming they are always late. There are only few of them that are keeping up.”

Another student of the Department of Physical and Health Education, Aliyu Nasiru told infomdia that, “Most of my students from other Departments are actually complaining that the Lecturer have not visited the class even once before this mid semester but for my Department, we started early only one or two lecturers that are not keeping up even though the semester generally is not as before and the students will be the ones to suffer it.”

On what may be responsible for this situation Mr. Nasir said he thinks commitments are too much for BUK lecturers particularly. “imagine you are the only one taking level one, two and three and you are also lecturing in other Departments how can you meet up? Their secondary engagements is really affecting students.”

On her part, a student of the Faculty of Arts and Islamic Studies who simply identified herself as Bilkisu said “Perhaps its due to the barrage of activities that usually take place in second semesters ranging from association weeks, organized lectures, workshops and electioneering campaigns.” She said despite this academic is paramount and remains our core calling in this community so there must be a way of balancing the activities with lecturing duties.
