A team of high powered delegation from the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN) led by their president, Professor J.A. Kolawole, were in BUK for an accreditation visit. Also, in the entourage was the Registrar for the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria to pave the way for the registration of BUK graduands of Pharm D. to practice as pharmacists in Nigeria.
The visiting delegation were at the University to assess the curricula and courses provided by the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences that would facilitate the registration of Pharmacy graduates to register with the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN) for practice upon graduation.
The leader of the team, Professor Kolawole, disclosed that the aim of the accreditation visit was not to witchhunt or sabotage the programme but rather to assess and improve on the existing facilities to ensure that the programme met international standards.
Professor Kolawole, who described his team as a composition professionals from academia and Federal Ministry of Health, specially thanked the Management of the University for the support it give them during their previous visit.
In attendance during the visit were the Registrar, Hajiya Fatima Binta Mohammed, the Director, Academic Planning Unit, Professor Bala Sidi, and the Dean, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Bayero University, Kano.

Responding, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Muhammad Yahuza Bello described the D. Pharm. programme of Bayero University as the brain-child of the Council because it was initiated and encouraged by both the Council and the NUC.
Professor Yahuza also described accreditation visitation as a means of ensuring quality in the university system. He said BUK considered accreditation as ‘peer-review’, which would ensure improvement on the programmes offered by the University.
The Vice Chancellor was happy with the composition of the team, who were men of honour and respect. He also described the visitation as timely because it would allow the University to take any corrective measure (if any) before a visit by the NUC in October this year.
‘Let us know where we can do better especially on the Pharm programme and we will be happy to take corrective measures’, he disclosed.
The Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN) is charged with the responsibility to regulate and control Pharmacy Education, Practice and Training in all its aspects and ramifications.
The PCN is responsible for the registration and licensure of all Pharmacists and Pharmaceutical Premises (Manufacturing, Importation,Distribution, Wholesale, Retail, HospitalPharmacies), as well as the issuance of Permit to Pharmacy Technicians and registration and Licensure of Patent and Proprietary Medicine Vendors in Nigeria.
